S.O.S. (Save Our Shep)

As a rule, I avoid Fox News for the same reason I avoid that religious channel with the lady with the big pink hair--there's something vaguely creepy about watching a clown pretend to be serious. But Shep Smith, Fox News dissident and one of my secret boyfriends, sometimes makes me slow my channel surfing and listen. Turns out I'm not alone--but not everyone likes what they're hearing.

From his teasing of terror junkie Glenn Beck, to his revealing e-mails from wingnutty viewers, Smith is pissing off the Fox faithful. This article is fairly superficial, but it's a sign that the rest of mainstream media is ready to stop pretending that Fox is a real news channel. Not even Smith seems to believe it:

"Of colleagues like Mr. Beck, Bill O'Reilly, and Sean Hannity, Mr. Smith said, "There's a lot of money in opinion, and those guys are fascinating, terrific entertainers. This is a news organization. There can't be a Fox News without news."

Smith appears to be referring to himself in that last line. And I hope he sticks with it--I hope he continues to be the voice of reason at Fox. But with the right's rhetoric becoming uglier and more xenophobic, I wonder how long it'll be before Smith's looking for another network on which to peddle his snark.
